Click to Enlarge! The Shockwave Karting Colorado Sprint Championship Series finished its season in fine style at the Steamboat Springs GP. Under indigo blue skies, the sun washed temporary circuit in the Steamboat Springs Meadow parking lot drew an out standing group of racers from around the region. The challenging 11-turn circuit drew universal praise from the drivers as both challenging and racable with several passing opportunities. At just over on half mile, the best took around 38 seconds to get around the course.

The headline Team Fury 125 Pro class had many quality racers, including soon to be Colorado resident and reining King of the Streets, Bobby Wilson (First Kart). Challenging him would be local racers G1 standout Sam Walls (GP), and SuperPro driver AJ Noud (GP). AJ was very fast at this past SKUSA World Finals in Norman and was eager to show that he could run with Wilson.

Seventeen pro drivers took the green for qualifying with Bobby Wilson starting his pole run with an early 38.292. Sam Walls was out to show that this old guy could run with the kids and he answered back with a 38.257 to nip Wilson for the pole. Noud let every one know he would be in the hunt with a 38.391. The only other driver in the 38's was Brandon Scarberry (Birel) with a 38.907.

In the pre-final, Walls held his position through turns 1 and 2 but Wilson was able to sneak under entering turn 3 to take the point. Neither Walls nor Noud were willing to let him go and they hounded his bumper relentlessly. Walls showed the power of his Swedtech moto coming off the turn 9 hairpin by sticking his nose under Wilson almost every lap in turn 11. Noud was content to sit in 3rd setting fast lap in the process. After 10 laps, the margin of victory for Wilson was only .115 of a second over Walls with Noud only .433 back. Every one looked for the main to be a shoot out as it was clear that this day, both Walls and Noud were quicker than Wilson.

Click to Enlarge! In the main, the top three held their positions at the start and the battle was on. Lap after lap they crossed the strip as one kart. Wilson's ICC motor was running the big carb/no air box allowed in the CSC and he clearly had the top end on the straight. But the torque of Walls' Honda moto was just so powerful off the corners and Sam could often get under Wilson going into several of the turns only to have the door shut with authority by Wilson. And so it went tilllap 18 of the 20 lap main when Wilson pinched Walls down entering turn 11 and Walls clipped a hay bale. Walls did a half spin, slowing Noud. The end result was a damaged kart for Walls, Ryan Bailey (Birel) was able to slip through for second and Noud rejoined the fray 10 seconds adrift. A resurgent Bailey tired to close the gap to Wilson but came up just over 2 seconds short at the end. The checkered flag found bobby Wilson as the new King of the mountain, Ryan Bailey second with Noud third. Lee Bradford and Cyrus Perme (DFM) rounded out the top 5. Fast lap went to Sam Walls.

The RBI Racing Junior 80 field was flush with talent. Adrian Carrio (Invader) the national number 2 in junior was expected to be the fast qualifer. However, on this day Reece Adragna (Arrow) toped with charts with a 39.821. Carrio clocked a 40.005 and Greg Welch (KGB), only tick back at 40.068. The top six, Josh Fellows (GP), Garret Arellano, and Jake Snider (CRG) were covered by only a half second.

The pre-final saw little change at the top as Adragna held his point with Carrio and Welch glued to his bumper. The top three crossed the line as one with only .762 covering the top three.

The main looked to be a barnburner as Carrio jumped into the lead, as Adragna was slow to leave the line as the green flag flew. The slow start held up Welch and that let Fellows slip through for third. The top four quickly gaped the field and it was clear that Welch was quicker than Fellows as he was looking for a way around. Welch made his move underneath Fellows going into turn 8 off the back straight but Fellows was having none of it and turned down on him. Rather than push his friend off, Welch deliberately spun the kart to avoid the contact, dropping him to 10th.

Up front, Carrio held the point through out but Adragna could not find a way past. Reece set fast lap of the race but could not find a way around and Carrio took the checker only .221 clear of Adragna. Farther back Fellows, Brad Bollack (DFM), Arellano, and Snider were having their own duel. Disaster struck for Fellows as a cover came off a hay bale completely blinding him and forcing him to the sidelines. Welch was on a tear back up through the field, quickly catching and dispatching one driver after another. Running laps .2 faster than the race leader, Welch pulled himself back into contention for third but ran out of laps. At the end it was Carrio, Adragna, Bollack, Welch and with his best performance this season Arellano.

The Senior heavy class saw the best drive of the season for Greg Augustine (First kart). New to the First Kart team, Greg put on a sterling drive to move up to the point from his 4th place starting position in the main to take the win. Second across the strip was Steve Reed (Birel). David Conyers had the point early but fell back to third followed by season champion Jack Warrington (GP) and Graeme Davies (Fittapaldi).

The only red flag of the day came in the KartMonster.com Tag Senior race. The first turn was difficult for the middle of the pack and several guys were unable to continue. There were no injuries to drivers but there were too many karts in the way to let the guys continue racing. On the restart, Jay Jacobellis pulled out a nice lead. However, lapped traffic would come in to play. For two laps a back marker would not let Jacobellis by and eventually there was contact that resulted in Jacobellis dropping to third. At the strip it was Chris Thode, series champion Dennis Garwood (DFM) in 2nd, Jacobellis followed by Lee Gagna (Margey) and Rich Vito (DFM) .
