Red Bull Driver Search announces 'scouted' racers for 2003 program

NEW YORK, NY - Six young American racers have been given a chance to earn a seat with a leading team, racing in a European junior series for 2004, as the Red Bull Driver Search announces the identities of the 'scouted' racers for the 2003 program. Over the past couple of months, a team of 'expert undercover' scouts has been scouring the ranks of junior U.S formulae for promising American racing talent.

Red Bull Driver Search 'scouted' candidates:
    Lawson Aschenbach (19), Florida
    Dominique Claessens (16), California
    Joe DıAgostino (17), Florida
    Colin Fleming (19) California
    Matt Jaskol (18), Nevada
    Charlie Kimball (17), California

The chosen drivers, aged between 16-19, will be appraised in an intense 3-day program being held in Sebring, FL from 3-5 September. In Sebring, they will join 15 karters (see list below) that have come through 4 regional outdoor go-kart qualifying rounds held earlier this summer. The 21 drivers will test in the Skip Barber Racing RT2000 Formula Dodge racecars. After 3 days of practice, testing and evaluation, a panel of judges (see list below) lead by Danny Sullivan will invite 10 drivers to travel to the Final Event at the Estoril Circuit, Portugal in October.

At this former Formula 1 World Championship track, the elite group of 10 finalists will be assessed and ultimately, the 2003 winners will be selected. The design of the Red Bull Driver Search program is such that Red Bull's funding of these young drivers in European racing, will prepare them to be a leading competitor in Formula 1 in a relatively short order.

    Panel of Judges:
Danny Sullivan, America, head of the Red Bull Driver Search, former Formula 1 driver for Tyrell-Ford, 1985 Indy 500 winner and 1988 CART Indycar Champion.
Dr. Helmut Marko, Austria, former Formula 1 driver for BRM, winner of the 1971 Le Mans edition and advisor to the Red Bull Driver Search program.
Alan Docking, Australia, owner of Alan Docking Racing, one of Britain's most prolific racing teams, best known for its success in British Formula 3.
Bertram Schafer, Germany, 1974 Formula Super VW champion, 1976 and 1978 German Formula 3 champion and team owner of Bertram Schafer Racing.
Roberto Cavallari, Italy, co-founder of JD Motorsport, a team that has prevailed in Eurocup Formula Renault championship with 4 consecutive titles from 1996-1999, the 1996 title won by Formula 1 driver and Red Bull sponsored, Enrique Bernoldi.

The 2003 Red Bull Driver Search program aims to discover and support highly talented young drivers already in racing, as well as the "diamond in the rough," lacking the knowledge and contacts needed to embark on a career in racing. The long-term goal is to have a steady group of 4 to 6 American drivers racing in Europe, groomed to break into Formula 1 and compete for the World Championship.
