PDKA State Championship Series races first of six events
By Walt Cox
SPRING RUN, PA - In a day of close finishes the closest was in the senior champ caged karts as Cale Reigle of Newport beat Andrew Tate of Carlisle by .015 seconds in a side-by-side and wheel-to-wheel race finish determined by the electronic transponders each kart carried.
Nineteen classes of karts competed in time trials Saturday and features Sunday at the Path Valley Speedway Park in the Burris Racing State Championship Series of the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Association. The state's WKA affiliate raced 267 entries in the first of six rounds sponsored by All Pro Products.
The time trails following four rounds of practice Saturday earned the fastest in each class medals sponsored by Silver Spring Speedway, and also set the lineups for Sunday's features. Both time trails and feature events in the PDKA races are electronically timed, and in Kid Karts for riders five to seven, all the kids receive winning trophies.
Results are unofficial until certified by the PDKA board of directors, but initial results show a mix of newcomers and past champions in the winner's circle. Cody Fairchok of Dillsburg set fast times in both Jr. Sportsman I Lite and Heavy karts, and Clark Simonton of Port Royal set fast times for both Unlimited 2-Cycle and Yamaha 2-Cycle.
Among the new PDKA winners, Logan Schouart of Hanover entered in three classes and won in both Jr. Sportsman Champ and Jr. Sportsman I Lites. Walt Mcleary of Hanover won over fields of more than 25 karts in the Sr. Medium and Sr. Heavy classes. Jeremy Ginder of Annville won an upset just ahead of past champion Missy Ciucci in Controlled Medium and then followed up with a win in Controlled Heavy class. Scott Geesey of Wellsville won both the Stock 2-Cycle and the Yamaha 2-Cycle features.
Among the PDKA veterans, Keith Blumenstein of Mechanicsburg won both the Jr. Lite and Jr. Heavy features. Tommy Beavers of Winchester VA won the Sr. Lite feature, and Tyler Bear, Austin Hogue and Jonathan Pillion won Jr. Sportsman features in their various weight classes.
"We had a great turnout with lots of new riders and some very competitive racing," said PDKA President Butch Diller. "Our return to the WKA is an asset and everyone seems pleased with our no-nonsense racing."
In 2003 the PDKA is racing under the joint sanction of the Burris National Speedway Series and the World Karting Association, with Burris Racing as the series sponsor. Riders who missed the first race still stand a chance because the best five of six finishes are counted toward championships.
The second race in the six-event series is at Selinsgrove Raceway May 18 and the fourth and fifth races are also at Selinsgrove July 27 and August 24. The third and the final races are at Path Valley June 22 and Sept. 14, and Sept. 21 is a rain date.
Karts race on American-made Burris tires in the M-15 A or B or the SS44 or SS55 series. Champ kart riders must have fire suits and champ karts must be WKA legal. Riders receive points for each feature event and those who enter all six races earn 50 bonus points. Karters who need more information can contact Diller at 717-691-5994 or e-mail answer21e @ aol.com, or consult the website at www.padirtkart.com.
Gates open at 7 a.m. for the Sunday, May 18 race at Selinsgrove. Registration is open until the driver's meeting at 9:30, followed by practice, time trials and then the day's feature events.
