MADISON, IL - After running only a limited schedule in 2002, and a return to his karting roots in the WKA Manufacturer's Cup Series, David Green has moved to the top of the point standings in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Division. His second place finish at Gateway on May 10 moved him past points leader Tod Bodine and gave the Brewco Motorsports team its first point lead ever in the Busch Series. However, Green is no stranger to leading the points standings, having won the Busch Series championship in 1994.

Green has had an up and down career recently. After moving up to the Winston Cup Series in 1997, he found himself without a ride in 2002. He used his off time to make a return to kart racing, running several of the WKA Manufacturer's Cup events. When Hendrick Motorsports driver Ricky Hendrick retired mid-way throught the 2002 season, Green was hired to run the remaining 12 races in the number 5 Hendrick Chevrolet. For 2003, Green was picked to drive the number 37 Brewco Motorsports Pontiac and will run the entire BGN series. David's two younger brothers also compete in NASCAR. Jeff Green drives in the Winston Cup for Teresa Earnhardt and Mark Green has been a frequent competitir in the Busch series.

Another BGN competitor with a karting background was Ashton Lewis Jr., who won his first pole at Gateway. Lewis led the first 44 laps and finished 33rd after getting caught up in a late race accident. Lewis began his driving career in karts in 1989 when he was 17 years old. From karts, he moved to driving Formula Fords in the Skip Barber Midwest Series. His next step was road racing in the British Formula Ford Series in 1992. He credits his road racing background for adapting well to downshifting at Gateway through the tight turns one and two. Gateway is the only track on the BGN circuit where gear shifting is utilized, since they no longer compete on any road courses.

Ron Young, a new competitor to the BGN Series, also got his start in karts, winning six track championships in his first two years of kart racing in Georgia. Young is running a limited Busch schedule in 2003. Gateway marked his sixth start in the series and his best qualifying effort to date, starting 25th. Young's crew chief is Ricky Pierson, son of the NASCAR legend David Pierson. Young had his best finish ever in the BGN Series at Gateway, finishing 18th while battling with Mike Wallace and Kerry Earnhardt.
