Bach comes from tenth on the grid and is inches away from victorySAUKVILLE, WI (May 19, 2003) - When Jamie Bach and B-K Motorsports arrived at Nazareth Speedway for this weekend's STAR MAZDA SERIES North American Championship event, they hoped to start up front, run up front earlier, and challenge for the victory at the end. When the checkered flag fell, Bach and his team had done all of those things...ultimately, coming inches from grabbing the win. In only his second appearance on an oval ever (the other being on the Phoenix International oval in early 2002), Bach came into the event looking to gain additional oval experience while grabbing some very necessary points in the North American Championship hunt. In Friday's qualifying sessions, Bach was consistently among the top ten on the speed charts, as the field fought wet versus dry conditions throughout the day. When it was all said and done, Bach put the B-K machine in the tenth starting spot with a hot lap of 28.127 around the 1-mile oval...the hometown circuit of one of Bach's racing heroes...Michael Andretti. During the race, slowed at halfway for a full course caution, Bach was flawless (minus a few close calls). At the drop of the green, he started working traffic immediately and was in the top five at the end of lap one. From there on out it was one lap at a time, chipping away at cars up front and staying out of trouble. Towards the end of the second long green flag run (which also was near the end of the race), Bach tried to get underneath fellow rookie Alan Rudolph for second, but there was not enough room and Bach had to back out of it and settle in for a third place finish. A few hours after the race, though, that attempt for second turned out to be an attempt for the lead, as on-track winner Moses Smith was disqualified for a fuel rule infraction and Bach was elevated to second place in the official race results. As is the case with all rounds of the STAR MAZDA SERIES, the Nazareth round will be televised on SPEED Channel in coming weeks. Broadcast times are yet to be announced. Bach and his B-K effort head back to Blackhawk Farms Raceway this coming weekend for an SCCA National Points race...where a few weeks ago, Bach bettered the track record he set in late 2001. Post-Race Quotes: Jaime Bach, B-K Motorsports Formula Mazda #34 "We are really happy with the way the race went. I have to thank R-Sport's Ron Roland for his help in spotting for me the entire race. He really talked us through the traffic and kept us out of trouble. We couldn't be happier with our results this weekend. We managed to stay out of trouble during the race as we worked our way up through the field. There were a couple of close calls with lapped traffic and on the restart as we were all battling wheel-to-wheel for position, but we were all giving each other room to race. I have to thank the folks at Mazda North America, especially the team at Mazdaspeed, I have to thank DELL Computers, Goodyear, and all of our B-K team members. We are looking forward to Mazda Raceway next month and a bunch of races in the coming weeks toward achieving our SCCA championship goals." |
