Stars of Tomorrow announces 2004 class structureHILLIARD, OH -The Snap-On Champ Car Stars of Tomorrow presented by RACER announced today their tentative core class structure for 2004. "In our ongoing efforts to simplify and unify karting in America with worldwide conformity, we are happy to announce a structure for next year that reflects our commitments to these values and to the CIK," said Stars principal Bobby Rahal. Classes for 2004 will be Intercontinental C (ICC, senior 125cc shifter), Intercontinental A (ICA, senior 100cc direct drive), Junior Intercontinental A (JICA), and a new Junior Intercontinental C (Junior ICC). "We understand there are many options in karting, especially American karting," said Stars founder Bryan Herta. "We have nothing against that, but we do believe the top level karting series should have focused and appropriate class structures. Following these successful formulas should produce great racing, great racers, and viable economics for the karting industry." The new Junior ICC will use existing ICC motors, thereby relying on a tried and true technology. Stars has begun, through National Technical Director Scott G. Evans, work with key industry figures to develop a sound method of detuning the ICC engine for junior use. "We have consulted with many of the established minds in kart engineering and feel confident that we can arrive at a technical specification that will allow these motors to run efficiently and reliably," said Evans. "I am looking forward to working with Scott and other builders to develop this specification," said Paul Leary of Hi-Tech Performance. "We will be aiming for an output comparable to the current 80cc range. The Junior ICC should be a very popular and exciting class." "There are obvious advantages in establishing a Junior ICC class," said Stars Marketing Director Glenn Holland. "Having a motor that can be used for both junior and senior classes provides more economy for racers. It should also produce more customers for these motors that enable manufacturers, importers, retailers, and engine builders to focus their efforts. There is also a good safety feature, as the Junior ICC class will have front brakes, whereas many of the 80cc Junior classes have rear brakes only. Stars takes the safety of its competitors very seriously and we feel this is a good step forward." Technical specifications for the modifying components needed for the Junior ICC motors will be announced in the near future. The Champ Car 'Stars of Tomorrow' presented by RACER karting series is the official first level in CART's driver development system and an officially sanctioned series of WKA/SCCA Pro Racing. Founded by racing star Bryan Herta and now owned in conjunction with a group of racing veterans, including three-time CART champion and Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, the Stars of Tomorrow serves as the first step for the CART driver development ladder. Stars focuses on recognizing the skills of the drivers rather than the technology development within the machines, using FIA/CIK International standards.
