Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for class winners Clayton Prater in SK 125 Pro and for Rich Salerno in the ICC 125 Pro class. Rounding out the top three in the SK 125 Pro class were Eric Winberg and Davey Larson. Following Salerno in the ICC 125 Pro class were Oscar Naverro and Anthony Santavy.

The traditional Formula One style standing start had a mixture of both classes as the ICC powered karts qualified at similar speeds to the moto-powered karts. The bragging rights for which class would be faster at Road America was set and come race time, it was a mixed bag of ICC and moto karts racing together in the lead draft. The five karts of Larson, Salerno, Tim Koutney, Winberg and Prater were able to pull out ahead of the rest of the field until Koutney suffered mechanical problems. This left the remaining four to battle it out with Larson staying at the point for most of the race. Friday the 13th brought Larson bad luck when his carb began to work loose during the race. After leading much of the race, Larson gave up the lead while trying to drive and shift one handed while holding his carb in place with his right hand. He was able to hang onto the lead draft and finish third in the SK 125 Pro class, but was disappointed in what could have been a win on the famous four miles of Road America. Larson had hoped to win for his sponsor, PG Racing, and for the series sponsor, Intrepid Kart Technology, as he was piloting an Intrepid kart himself.

Eric Winberg tried the slingshot move around Prater but fell just short at the finish line. In what was rather unique for a kart road race, the entire race was announced from the control tower where the announcer can follow the whole race with video monitors. These monitors would also come in handy throughout the weekend for determining pushing violators, as many black flags were thrown for drivers who chose to push other karts while racing.

The next round of the Intrepid Kart Pro Shifter Series will be held on Friday July 4th, at the super smooth and fast Putnam Park Road Course which is located west of Indianapolis in Mt. Meridian, Indiana. See www.internationalracingassociation.com for more information or call Dave Larson at 1-866-489-DAVE(3283).
