Records fall like dominos at Badger Raceway
DOUSMAN, WI - Cooler dry air and a good build-up of rubber on the track surface June 29th combined to make the Badger Raceway lightening fast for Race #8 in the BKC Bridgestone Tire Championship points series. The near-perfect conditions clobbered the fast times and track records in 8 different classes.
In Briggs Jr. Sportsman, Tommy Anderson just pulled away from the field right from the green flag. In doing so, he managed to grab the track record for the class. Steven Wirtz, who finished second, appeared to be reeling Anderson in near the end, but Anderson was so strong, he couldn't come close.
In the always-exciting 125cc Shifter Feature, Brian Julien would again be "king of the starts". Just as the flagman twitched, Julien rocketed his BRM chassis to the front and seemed to be unstoppable. However, as the race wore on, Jesse Schwabe, new to shifter ranks, began pulling Julien back in. With two laps to go, Julien bobbled in Badger's "Sweeper" and Schwabe grabbed the top spot. Schwabe went on for his first feature win in Badger's premier class with Julien settling for second.
Besides the Shifter race, the race to watch was the 2-Cycle Jr. Sportsman feature. Ryan Schwister jumped out to a huge lead and looked unbeatable. However, TJ Koyen was coming up through the pack due to a couple bad heat races. Koyen just kept picking off drivers until Schwister was in his sites. Within two laps, Koyen managed to run down Schwister and pass him on the OUTSIDE of the straightaway and Turn 1.
In HPV Jr., Zack Emmons jumped out to a good lead and managed to capture the track record. Mike Landeck Jr. again dominated Briggs Heavy and captured another fast time for 2003. Joe Brenner also dominated his class all day and took home a fast time in Yamaha Jr. SSX Can.
The Badger Kart Club will be off for the holiday weekend. However, when racing resumes the following weekend, they will be at the legendary Blackhawk Farms Raceway in northern Illinois. This marks only the second time in 20 years that the Badger Kart Club has traveled for a points race. Additionally, another date at the Briggs and Stratton Motorplex has been set for a BKC race in 2003. Details to come later.
