Colton Clevenger and Jordan Thiel tied mid-way through Burris Circle Tour season Story by Sue Nuttall Coming into the Mid Season Championship of the Burris Circle Tour schedule, four drivers in the Jr. Sportsman Champ class are within 25 points of each other at the top of the Series Points Standings. Today, Colton Clevenger got off to a strong start winning both of the heat races. At the halfway point he was leading the feature with Tyler Blume riding his bumper. Blume made a passing attempt inside, but quickly lost his momentum. With 14 laps gone in the race, Dylan Barbosa took over the lead. Barbosa and Clevenger went side-by-side and then split the lapped traffic. The karts were still side-by-side when they came out on the other side. At the white flag Clevenger has a one kart lead and made a great move to the inside coming across the line to win the feature and take over the top spot in the Jr. Sportsman Champ and Overall Series Points. It is easy to understand why the Jr. Sportsman Champ is most competitive class in the Burris Circle Tour this year. A large class with 15 regular races boasts three different feature winners in six races. A victory today moved Colton Clevenger, a Cherry Valley, IL student, into a tie for the Overall Series Points lead. Dylan Barbosa, Mackenzie Piller and Tyler Blume are so close that a single position makes a big difference. Jordan Thiel, a 4th year driver from Appleton, Wisconsin is tied with Clevenger for the lead in the Overall Burris Circle Tour Points battle. Thiel is also the leader in the Junior 3 Lite class midway through the season. Jordan has consistently finished in the Top 3 to steadily build his lead over Mason Hadley and Billy Hulbert. Hadley and Hulbert are tied for second place in the Jr. 3's and share a hometown of Channahon, IL. Andy Jones sits atop the Class Points in Jr. 1. However, today's win by Alex Stumpf and a third place showing for Derrick Gough have turned up the points battle in this class. Matt Holzgrafe turned his best finish of the year at second for the day. Dylan Hobbs continues to solidify his lead in Jr. 2 Lite with consistent performances in each race. Hobbs joined Ben Stumpf, Aaron Katzenberg and Tyler Peterson on the podium today. Jessica Brannam leads last year's Jr. Yamaha Class Champion Carly Mandarino in the points and earned another feature trophy today. Matt Vice added another feature win today in the Jr. Champs, bringing his total wins for the year to three. Adding those wins to three second-place finishes; Matt has built a little cushion in his class points lead over Ryan Marshall and Michael Bilderback. 2003 marks the first year the Kid Kart Class is running for points. After a few races to learn the rules of the road, Elliott Prichett is the current leader while Austin Hintt and Morgan Schissel are right behind in second and third place respectively. Eric Freiberg is the points leader in both Yamaha Sportsman and Sr. Medium. Seth Lootans won the Yamaha Sportsman feature race today to tighten up the points battle. Ryan Rockhold is in second place in Sr. Medium. Brandon Eash, from Rockford, IL, is third in the Sr. Medium class and is the points leader in the Sr. Heavy. First year racers Tyler Traber and Jay Badgley are showing well in Sr. Heavy. Joe Chiapetta won the Sr. Sportsman Feature Race for the second time in the 2004 season to extend his points lead over J.J. Adams. Nicole Phillips and Jim Maher are battling for top honors in the Sr. Champ Kart class. In today's race, Jim took the checkered and Nicole was second. Tiffany Wester is the current points leader in Sr. F200. The Burris Circle Tour has six races remaining in the 2003 season. The next race, August 3rd at Lake Geneva Raceway will feature the Sr. Medium Short Season Championship Race and the High Rev's event for Kid Karts and Jr. Yamaha's.
