STARS Champion Fleming wins Barber-Dodge Runoff and $100,000 in fundingSEBRING, FL - Former Stars of Tomorrow champion Colin Fleming took the top prize Friday at the Barber-CART Scholarship Runoff. Fleming, of North Hills, California, was awarded $100,000 in funding towards the 2003 Barber Dodge Pro Series season after three days of intensive competition at Sebring International Raceway. "I'm ecstatic. I was really intimidated at the beginning of the week since I had never been in the car before, and this group of drivers is really talented," said Fleming. "Winning the Runoff can be traced back to my Stars of Tomorrow championship in 2001. That allowed me to get the Formula Dodge scholarship for the National Championship in 2002, which was the door to this win based on my performance." I don't think driving the Team Rahal Champ Car early this year as a part of the Stars award hurt either!" Fleming impressed the judging panel, which included racing insiders such as Bobby Rahal, Tommy Kendall, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Michael Valiante with his composure outside of the car, and his speed and consistency inside of it. Fleming's performance was particularly impressive given that he had never driven a Barber Dodge Pro Series car before this week. "This is a great break for me in my career, and I want to make a strong run at the Rookie of the Year title this season, and then come back and hopefully win the Barber Dodge championship in 2004 and then move up the ladder towards Champ Cars," concluded Fleming. "Colin's performance shows the legitimacy of the CART Ladder System and also of the Stars of Tomorrow program," said CART Ladder Series manager Robert Dole. "Colin has been racing karts for years and his triumph today wouldn't have been possible without the Stars of Tomorrow karting series." The CART 'Stars of Tomorrow' karting series is the official first level in CART's driver development system and an officially sanctioned series of WKA/SCCA Pro Racing. Founded by racing star Bryan Herta and now owned in conjunction with a group of racing veterans, including three-time CART champion and Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, the Stars of Tomorrow serves as the first step for the CART driver development ladder. Stars focuses on recognizing the skills of the drivers rather than the technology development within the machines, using FIA/CIK International standards.
