Three double at Waynesfield Dirt Nationals

    Story by Bruce C. Walls
WAYNESFIELD, OH - Brett Miller, Tony Belk and Jimmy Furrow were double winners during round four of the WKA/Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series July 18-20 hosted by a new national venue Waynesfield Motorsports Track in Waynesfield, OH. They were among 640 entries in the Twister Kart Nationals.

Miller, of Greenville, SC, posted wins that Saturday in Power Products/Super Seat Briggs Limited Heavy and Trick/Olimpic Briggs Lite. Lynn Wiles spun a 12.259 seconds lap on the 1/5-mile dirt oval for Limited Heavy's pole and Miller made the outside pole with a 12.330 seconds trip. When the green flag flew Miller roared past Wiles for a never surrendered lead to the finish where he was just 0.174 seconds ahead of national points leader Tony Gaylord.

"I'll tell you what, the kart was a handful, it was loose as a goose, but J.T. Stillwagon had the motor right and the kart was just good enough to win. I want to thank J.T. Stillwagon and Hi Tech Racing Engines for everything he does, my mom and dad and just everybody who pitched in."

Later that day, after turning Briggs Lite's pole lap at 12.806 seconds, Miller led that thirty-three-racer field with perfection building a 2.380 seconds finish line advantage over outside pole winner Bradley Gerrells. "The kart was pretty good in the last race, our ties were worn out after that so we had to make a quick call, but J.T. Stillwagon picked the right ones and we came out with another win."

Belk turned in two wire-to-wire wins Saturday starting with RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Briggs Senior where a 13.191 seconds lap earned him the pole and 4.157 seconds separated him from second place Tom Adkins, of Sharptown, MD who made his first national podium finish in five years of competition. "I knew it would be dry slick, so I took her down a little tighter. The Tod Miller Racing Engine was awesome and the Phantom kart was great," Belk said. " I'd like to thank my wife, she worked her butt off on tires and Sean for his help and all of Tod Miller's crew, it was all team work.

Three races later Belk was on Southern Express Kart Shop Super Heavy's pole, which he earned with a 13.189 seconds lap. From there he led the nineteen-racer field flawlessly finishing 2.1978 seconds ahead of Lonnie Dawson. "We changed tires for that one. We didn't know what it was going to do, but it worked out. It's just tires," Belk credited after his second win.

Furrow, who earned three wins during this year's Grand National at Southern Pitt Raceway, scored the first of his two wins in Phantom Racing Chassis Briggs Senior Champ. Waynesville, NC competitor Chuck Broadway bagged the pole with a 13.696 seconds lap and Furrow had to fight his way to the front from third. Broadway blasted into the initial lead. Furrow ran him down and got by him, but before he booked a lap the race's only caution flag waved. Broadway led the restart, but Furrow quickly recaptured the lead. In the final laps Salisbury, NC competitor Jody Miller took second and trailed Furrow across the finish line by 1.293 seconds.

"I love it man," Furrow said of his new addiction to winning. "I can't get enough of it. I'd just like to thank Ransone and Sons Plumbing, Larry Ransone, Buck Ransone, Lucas Ransone, Andy Murray, Marc Mode and Eddie Mishue. Without them I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't be doing this. The kart handled great. Andy Murray is the man, he's the tire man and Eddie Mishue's got the juice so we're doing pretty good."

That Sunday Furrow cranked out a 12.727 seconds lap for Bordeaux Dyno Cams Controlled Heavy's outside pole. Chris Beazley turned the pole lap at 12.642 seconds, hustled into the early lead and led the thirty-racer field through the race's only restart before surrendering the front to Furrow. Furrow held the lead while James Polmonari, of Memphis, TN, fought his way from ninth to second where he trailed Furrow by 1.604 seconds at the end.
