"A Few Days of Testing"
By Jesse Lemel
I was recently asked by Briggs and Stratton to help them test their World Formula Engine, and I jumped on the offer. The testing was held on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and we used Bondurant Racing School's facilities on Monday and Tuesday; while on Wednesday we went to Formula K Raceway, otherwise known as Phoenix Kart Racing Association. The testing was a wonderful experience, Briggs and Stratton invited beginners, drivers with limited experience and some more advanced/ professional drivers. Some of the more advanced race drivers included Bondurant teaching pros and Super Pro driver Michael McDowell and myself. Also some of the Briggs and Stratton guy's were pretty good drivers like Dave Klaus.
This was a fun couple of days of testing, I unfortunately did not get to test all of the days as I had to attend classes on Tuesday; however, I still managed to get in some testing on Tuesday night. I would have gotten in a good couple of hours had it not been for bad traffic due to a car accident on the highway between Tucson and Phoenix. This was not that bad of a problem as I drove virtually non-stop for all Wednesday until it RAINED in the late afternoon. Yes I just said rain, in Phoenix, Arizona we could not escape the rain. We actually continued to run in the rain for a while and it was good fun except as we closed in on the twenty hour mark every thing on the kart started to fall apart, except the motor, the motors were still running strong after we had logged nearly twenty hours on all four of the test karts.
Wednesday was truly a fun day at the track as we were racing each other all day long, playing the habitual game of cat and mouse. We would set up our little races over and over again, as we would put the fasted person in the back and then race until someone had a commanding lead at which point they would slow down and wait for the others moving to the back again. As soon as we were set we back at it, never stopping only slowing to set up another mini race. We would get into some long races going back and fourth passing each other back and fourth multiple times a lap and having a great time.
Briggs and Stratton has truly elevated the quality of their engines when they created the World Formula. We had no major problems with the engines running them extremely hard for twenty hours each in three days. The karts were falling apart and we were running out of gears which we would literally wear the teeth completely off of them, but through it all the motors were flawless. Also the racing was incredible. It was some of the closest racing, I've ever taken part of. It was extremely difficult for anyone to pull away and really gain a lead over the others, and passing was rather easy as they were fast enough that you could take advantage of the draft, or set someone up with smooth driving and proper techniques.
