The Inside Track

    Track Champion at age 7

EAGLE, WI - What's the saying "I want to be like Mike"? Not for seven year old Jacob Zellmer, he wants to be like Matt, Kenseth that is, and he's on his way. Racing karts since his 5th Birthday, Jacob has been on a racetrack well over 250 times. The 2002 season proving to be a glimpse of what's to come with 96 Starts - 45 Wins, earning Jacob the 2002 Kid Kart Track Championship at Jules Raceway. An impressive record at any age! Racing on dirt and asphalt tracks, road courses or circle tracks, night or day races, Jacob seems to "have what it takes". Dousman's Badger Raceway, Lake Geneva Raceway, the Briggs & Stratton MotorPlex at Elkhart Lake, Rockford Speedway, Jules Raceway in Wilmington, IL are all familiar territory for this seven year old.

Unlike many children who change their mind each time they are asked what they want to be when they grow up, Jacob has been firmly in the grips of a pro racing goal. Jacob definitely wants to be like Matt Kenseth, his Winston Cup favorite (coincidentally, the same number as Jacob, #17). Jacob met Matt at a race in Slinger this year and gave Matt a racing trading card with his photo on it. Matt took the time to speak with Jacob, even asking Jacob why he was looking at the camera in the photo and not the racetrack. Of course, Jacob responded how any seven year old would "I don't know". Matt put the card in the pocket of his racing suit and won the race, Jacob thought that was "pretty cool".

Jacob's trophy collection is taking over the family room, currently 51 trophies and 7 medals surrounded by the many racing photos of Jacob. "There are more awards in our family room than one person could hope to get in a lifetime, and he's only 7" says Mom, Amy Zellmer. "Jacob will have 11 years of 'driving' experience at the age of 16, when most teenagers are just starting to drive." says crew chief and Dad, Dave Zellmer.

Karting has become extremely popular, going hand in hand with the popularity of racing as a spectator sport, especially the kid karts. Since Jacob started racing, the Zellmer's have seen the interest first hand, having two of their friends purchase karts for their children and begin karting. The Burris Circle Tour, which includes Lake Geneva Raceway and Rockford Speedway, have anywhere from 8-18 kid karts at their races. Often times the Kid Kart class drivers outnumber the other classes. The 2002 Kid Kart feature day at Lake Geneva drew 16 kid karts. These 5 to 8 year olds give it all they can out on the track. The best part, they have a great time together, on and off the track.

"We recently attended the Jules Raceway banquet where Jacob accepted the 2002 Kid Kart Track Champion trophy. What an accomplishment, we are so very proud."
