Rock Island Grand Prix staff releases update on 2002 event

    From the Staff at RIGP
ROCK ISLAND, IL - The Rock Island Grand Prix, America's Premier Street Race, is held each year on Labor Day weekend in Rock Island, Illinois along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

This year, there are several things that the promoters would like to clarify: 1.) Classes. The 2-Cycle Controlled Super Stock class was dropped. Added were a 125cc Masters (SKUSA Formula G1) class for shifter drivers over age 35, and a CIK Intercontinental C class (SKUSA Formula IC) for IC motors (not open to A license holders).

2.) Rotax Max Street Challenge will run international class rules. The Rock Island Grand Prix is one of only a couple races whose winner will quality directly to the US Rotax Max Nationals, unless it's a foreign driver. We have had some significant foreign interest in this race.

3.) Officials. We have added a second assistant race director on the backside of the track. He is Dean Duckett (aka "Spot") who has worked Rock Island in the past. Only the two assistant race directors, the race director, and the flag stand will be able to throw a red flag.

4.) The 80cc gearbox class was almost dropped this year due to the low number of drivers last year. Our race organization has specified that if there are not twenty registered entries by August 1, 2002 the class will be dropped. So please encourage those 80cc drivers you know to race at Rock Island and sign up early.
