SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Mid-State Kart Club held its second point race of the 2002 season on a beautiful Spring day on April 14. Forty- two entries were on hand with the Junior Sporstman, Yamaha Super Can and 4-Cycle Heavy classes drawing the most entries. The races went smoothly with the exception of the 4-Cycle Heavy class where Ron Lykins got upside down in the second heat. The Kadet class participants were treated to free ice cream cones courtesy of Hardees. All Kadet participants also take home a trophy each week for participation. The trophy designs will be different throughout the year for the Kadet class.
For those interested in racing in the oval classes, you are encouraged to attend the club meetings to voice your opinions on what is needed to attract more participants. The club is considering adding a spec tire rule for the oval classes and allowing IKF tech engines to participate. Club meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month at the Riverton Eagles Club. Speedway racers should mark their calendars for the second annual Firecracker 400 oval race scheduled for June 29 and 30. The Briggs Medium class will pay $1000. to win.
The club continues to make improvements to the facility with the near term priorities being to add a water line to the scoring tower and to install lighting for the oval and new pit area. For those competing in the WKA Mid-West Sprint Series at Mid-State on June 1 and 2, there are two more club races scheduled prior to that event on May 19 and 26. This may be a good opportunity to get in some extra practice time prior to the WKA race.
