Rock Island Grand Prix and SKUSA announce "Rock Island Cup" seriesROCK ISLAND, IL - The Rock Island Grand Prix and Superkarts! USA have come together to present an exciting conclusion to two new SKUSA semi-pro classes for 2002. The Rock Island Grand Prix (RIGP), through SKUSA -- a national sanctioning organization for kart racing in the United States, will award special points for the Formula IC and the Formula G1 classes at the 2002 SKUSA ProMoto Tour preliminary events. Both the East and West zones will conduct three preliminary event weekends leading to the World Finals in Norman, Oklahoma, in September. At each of these preliminary events, Formula G1 and Formula IC will race in "Special Presentation" support programs. Each of these Zone races will provide opportunities to earn RIGP Points. These East and West Zone points will be blended together Labor Day Weekend at the Rock Island Grand Prix, North America's largest karting street race held in Rock Island, Illinois. The exciting Shoot Out will award final points to determine the winner of the "Rock Island Cup" in each of these two classes.
The Formula IC class is powered by a special purpose built 125cc, water-cooled, six-speed racing engines. All of these engines are currently built in Europe by several different manufacturers. Conceived, designed and built specifically for racing, these engines power a very exciting level of SKUSA semi-pro shifter kart racing. The Formula G1 class is powered by highly refined and tuned motocross motorcycle engines. These engines are also 125cc, water cooled, six-speed racing engines but come from the motorcycle industry. These engines are specially transformed from their designed purpose into 40 horsepower "rockets" by a small group of highly skilled engine builders in the United States and Canada. This class is open to drivers age 35 and over. Organizers are proud and excited to add this unique new series feature to the 2002 Rock Island Grand Prix, which will also host the SKUSA "King of The Streets" feature event for SuperPro drivers for the third consecutive year. The Rock Island Grand Prix will also feature a Formula MX gearbox class. All gearbox classes will run under SuperKarts! USA rules. The Rock Island Grand Prix is in its eighth year and features races for 14 classes of karts, including 2-cycle and 4-cycle clutch karts as well as shifter karts. It also features the Rotax Max Street Challenge. Presenting Sponsors of the Rock Island Grand Prix are SBC/Ameritech and Bi-State Home Improvement Corp. The $25,000 purse is sponsored by Jumer's Casino of Rock Island. Additional race information is available at its website at www.rockislandgrandprix.com. |
