Innovative new gear shifting device declared legal by SKUSA Modifications to an innovative new gear shifting device launched at the World Kart Expo in February has made it legal to use for Sprint 125 Division racing. The new Sharp Shifter pneumatic gear changing device attracted considerable interest when it was launched at the Chicago show and questions raised about its legality have now been addressed by the optional removal of the ignition kill device. Super Karts USA (SKUSA) National Technical Adviser, John R. Clasen, has confirmed that the modified version of the Sharp Shifter can now meet the racing regulations for both 250 and Sprint 125 divisions. SKUSA rule 20.3.4.15.7 relating to gearbox shifting allows for mechanical gearbox shifting only and the absence of an ignition kill device fulfils this requirement. He says, "Provided there is no ignition kill device it is legal for the Sprint 125 division, and for the 250 division it is legal either way." The Sharp Shifter also meets the requirements of the World Kart Association which states in rule 613.9 that air shifters are allowed for 80cc and 125cc MOTO. Manufactured by New Zealand company Sharp Concepts Ltd, the new Sharp Shifter has attracted wide spread global interest due to its ability to provide finger tip control gear shift changing in less than 2/10 of a second. It is constructed from billet aluminium and incorporates a low pressure on-board mechanical compressor which compresses air as the kart is racing. Sharp Concepts managing director, Jeff Sharp says, "We believe the Sharp Shifter can enhance both the speed and safety of kart racing by enabling the driver to keep both hands on the wheel when changing gears, and subsequently stay more focused on the track." The new modified fully pneumatic version of the Sharp Shifter will be available in the US from May.
