B-K & Bach extend top "5" finish streak to nineteen in a row

SAUKVILLE, WI (June 24, 2002) - While the B-K Motorsports Formula Mazda was not the first car to cross under the checkered flag during Sunday's feature race at Road America's June Sprints, driver Jamie Bach and his team extended their TOP "5" finish streak to nineteen races in a row. Dating back to the June Sprints weekend in 2001, Bach has not finished lower than fifth position in any race and has been the victor in thirteen of the nineteen races he has entered.

After setting fast time during Friday's opening practice (nearing track record time...just a few ticks over 2:18), Bach was ready to make a run for the pole in Saturday's first qualifier. For over half of the session, Bach sat on the pole ahead of PRO series race winner Guy Cosmo. Track conditions were a bit slower than Friday and Bach turned in a 2:20 lap to sit atop the leader board. Unfortunately, a full course caution brought the field to pit lane and Bach decided not to return to the track so he did not lose his fast time of the day. While he sat in pit lane, two cars snuck past him in the line-up and placed him third on the provisional grid. In Sunday morning's second and final qualifying session, Bach bested his Saturday time by nearly a full second, but track conditions were not as optimal and he remained in third place in the final line-up for the 13 lap feature event.

When the green flag dropped in Sunday's race, temperatures topped 90 degrees. Bach looked to move up early at the start and by the time the field made it to turn five, Bach had claimed the second spot. By mid-race, however, Cosmo and Minnesota's Matt Downs secured the top two spots and Bach rode in third. Another full course caution slowed the field and set-up a three lap dash to the finish. At the start of the final lap, Bach was passed for third and came under the checkered flag in fourth place, just a second behind the race winner Downs.

"It was a tough race. We had hoped to come out on top, but we just missed the set-up ever so slightly. I felt like we were right there close with Guy (Cosmo) and Matt (Downs), but I could not get a head of steam to get a run on them. Even if we did not bring it home in first, it was a terrific weekend for our program. Having the Scouts and MADD folks here with the Salute to Youth families was an important program for us. We are also very proud to have the opportunity to do the television spots we did. As we make plans for the Toyota Atlantic series next year, we are definitely looking to be out front for our sponsors and marketing partners. The only way to do that is to keep getting good opportunities like this. Also, to accomplish this type of top "5" finish streak means a great deal to us. We have had a great deal of good luck coupled with what we feel to be solid preparation on the car. To run up front like we have also means that our sponsors and business partners have their names in the spotlight."

An added bonus for Bach and B-K surrounding the June Sprints was a series of TV features on three different networks and a special hospitality luncheon hosting the Boy Scouts of America, Mother's Against Drunk Driving, and families from Road America's SALUTE TO YOUTH Weekend. Between 50 and 75 young people and their families joined B-K for a luncheon, pit area tour, autograph opportunities with drivers, and team t-shirt photo shoots. On TV, Bach and B-K were featured (at 5 p.m.) Friday in a three minute story on FOX-11. The TV spot was LIVE from Road America's Briggs and Stratton Motorplex and focused on Bach and his climb up through the motorsports ranks from his early days in karting. In addition to the FOX piece, NBC and CBS networks from Milwaukee will be airing feature stories on Bach and B-K this week. Air times will be announced shortly after scheduling is determined.

Finally, it was announced during the June Sprints weekend that Bach and B-K will be featured in three upcoming print articles. Two articles will print in the event program for the Road America 500 where Bach will be competing in the STAR MAZDA PRO SERIES and a third will print in SCCA's Sports Car Magazine previewing the 2002 SCCA National Championship RUNOFFS to be held in September at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
