Goth leads from the get-go at Badger Raceway
By Mike Weaver
DOUSMAN, WI (June 30, 2002) - The heat of summer continued to ravage Badger Raceway. Race 9 of the Bridgestone Tire Badger Kart Club Championship series saw temperatures in the low nineties with very high humidity. There were no heat-related injuries reported, but everyone was dripping with sweat by 9:00 in the morning.
When practice and the first heats started in the morning, the track really hadn't come in yet. There wasn't enough rubber laid yet and the sunny conditions weren't helping. But as the day wore on, the track became tighter and tighter and those who were on top of their game took full advantage.
During the features, Garrett Goth lead from the very get-go in the ITR sponsored Briggs Lite. David Storm followed in pursuit but just never got close enough to make a challenge for the win. However, Tyler Wolfert and Gene Warren swapped for third and fourth a number of times during the race with Wolfert coming out on top in the end.
In the Max-Torque Clutch Briggs Jr. Sportsman feature, Grant Hoffmeister ran an excellent race leading most of the feature. However, Tommy Anderson worked his way to the front off a bad start and ran down and passed Hoffmeister on the last lap for the win.
SPSI HPV Sr. saw a ton of action during their feature heat. On the start, Matt Mercier would jump out to take the lead. But Nicole Baier and Marty Keck would put all three nose-to-tail. On lap 2, Keck got around Baier and started working on Mercier for the lead. But the two tangled in Badger's difficult right-hand corner and Keck was too damaged to continue. The crash handed the lead to Baier with Scott Kalish in 2nd and Kory King in 3rd. As Mercier was trying to work his way back up to the front, he tangled with King and the subsequent damage was too much as he was forced to retire for the day. Kalish appeared to be hooked up as he ran down Baier and was able to get by. He would go on to take his first feature win of the year.
In the Beaver Dam Trophy sponsored Briggs Heavy, Mike Landeck jumped out to a 5-kart lead over Aron Scalissi. But a broken muffler forced Landeck to the pits relinquishing the lead and the win to Scalissi. The Quellas, Derrick and Tim, would also capitalize on Landeck's (and other's) misfortunes to grab 2nd and 3rd for the day.
