Capell breaks Bergfelt's win streak at Naugles Unlimited All-Stars eventPITTSBURGH, PA - There's something about hot summer nights and dirt track racing, they just go so well together. A good crop of unlimited dirt kart racers seemed to think the same as they showed up for the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club's B.R.E. Small Engines - Unlimited All-Stars race at Naugles Speedway on Saturday, July 6. Naugles Speedway is located in Findlay Township, near Pittsburgh. The field was spilt into two groups for the qualifying heats. In the first heat of group 1, point leader, Mark Bergfelt won. Scott Deasy won the second heat of that group. In Group 2, the #07 of Jim Capell, a regular competitor at the speedway, was the man to beat. He won both of the qualifiers. The first row for the start of the 20-lap feature was made up of Capell and Bergfelt. On the second attempt at a start, the front pair of drivers ran wheel to wheel, side by side for the first two and 3/4 laps until Capell managed to break free going into turn four at the end of the third lap. Although never more than a handful of kart lengths ahead of Bergfelt, he was never seriously challenged for the rest of the race and he put is Yamaha rotary valve engine powered kart in the winner's circle. Bergfelt held on for second after a four Unlimited All-Stars event winning streak. He was followed by Scott Deasy who powered his way up from a seventh-place starting position. Harry McElhaney finished fourth and he was trailed by Joe Mudrick, Keith Clark, Mike Clark, Ray Tipton, Ronny Stoll, Eric Esterly and James Claudson. June 23rd was an unusual date in the history of the Unlimited All-Stars. The Unlimited All-Stars were scheduled to compete at Kartrack in Albion, Pennsylvania and it was the first time ever that it did not rain on the day that the Unlimited All-Stars were scheduled to race there. On this particular day, rain would have provided welcome relief from the hot and humid conditions that prevailed. Because of the weather, the flat, paperclip shaped track, got hard, slick and developed a black groove. The track provided a real challenge for the drivers. Mark Bergfelt was up to the challenge and put his kart with dual right rear tires across the finish line first for both qualifying heats. Bergfelt started the feature in the preferred pole position. Randy Adair started second. At the drop of the green Bergfelt immediately took the lead. On the second lap, Adair spun, bringing out the first of five cautions. Keith Clark was in second at the restart. On the fourth lap the #21 kart and Eric Esterly brought out the yellow flag. Bergfelt remained in the lead and Keith Clark in second until Ray Tipton, from the state of Virginia, passed Clark on the 5th lap. Meanwhile, Adair charged up to third by the ninth lap. He held onto that position until once again he spun on the 13th lap. This put Keith Clark into third place for the re-start but the #21 kart passed him two laps later. By the 19th lap, Adair had managed to work his way back up to third. The caution came out one more time on the 19th lap. At the drop of the final green Tipton was second behind Bergfelt but Adair muscled into second on the final lap. Bergfelt, Adair and Tipton were followed by Keith Clark, the 21 kart, Eric Esterly and Harry McElhaney. Barris Supply, in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, was the sponsor when the Unlimited All-Stars visited the Slippery Rock Raceway in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania on June 9, 2002. It was a hot, dry and dusty day at the races. Scott Deasy and Mark Bergfelt won the qualifying heats. The track was very dry and dusty by the time the Unlimited All-Stars were to run their feature. The track management suggested that the entire track is watered before the final race of the day but it was finally determined that only the outside would get water. After several tries at a start, Deasy took the lead at the start. After several laps, Bergfelt managed to get the inside coming off of turn four and took the lead entering turn one. Immediately afterward hit something laying on the dusty track and spun. Joe Mudrick, blinded by dust, crashed into Deasy. The red flag came out. Before restarting the race, the entire track was watered. After restarting the karts, the competitors ran in the surface before lining up. Bergfelt continued to lead until the finish. Harry Mcelhaney finished second, his best ever Unlimited All-Stars finish. Scott Deasy charged from the tail to finish third. He was followed by Keith Clark, Mike Clark, Joe Mudrick, Ray Tipton, David Grey and Eric Esterly. The Unlimited All-Stars visited Naugles Speedway on June 6. Mark Bergfelt won his second race of the season there and he was followed by Keith Clark, Joe Mudrick, Ed Hudock, Harry McElhaney, Ray Tipton, Ronny Stoll, Mike Clark, David Grey, Eric Esterly, Jack Whitmore, and Jim Capell. |
