Badger Raceway's track in prime condition

    By Mike Weaver
DOUSMAN, WI (August 11, 2002) - With the recent running of the Midwest Sprint Series WKA Regional race at Badger, the track was in prime condition with lots of fresh rubber in all the corners. This helped spark another great day of tight racing action. Also, with the WKA Grand Nationals scheduled for the following weekend, the club saw a small influx of national drivers trying to gain more track time.

In Yamaha Jr. SSX Can, Jeff Funk Jr. dominated by over 5 seconds over second place Wes Steege. Steege moved up through the pack to gain second but was no match for Funk. The race was cut short when a pack of four karts all touched on the front straight sending Caitlin Tannis into the hay bails. This brought out the day's only red flag. Tannis would return to race and take 3rd in Briggs Animal Jr.

Tommy Anderson again won in Briggs Jr. Sportsman, but he had to work for it. Him and the other class leaders started off the front row and had to drive their way to the front. Along with Cody Weber and Grant Hoffmeister, all the youngsters put on a clinic of great driving.

Past Badger champion Teri Schott hadn't raced in years, but made a comeback in 2002. Schott has come close to winning the competitive Sr. Sportsman Lite class, but until now, hadn't done so. With an excellent start, Schott had to hold off Erin Cechal, Jill Rubenzer and John Ellingham. Cechal took the lead more than once, but Schott was able to grab it back and go on for her first feature win in a long time.

TJ Nevels got his first feature win in Yamaha Jr. Can. Second-place Derek Crane moved up through the field and was beginning to gain on Nevels, but time ran out and Nevels would take the win.

Joe Hartmann and Shelley Krzewinski put on a great show the first half of the Briggs Jr. Stock feature. They Swapped positions and ran side by side for the first half of the race until a slip by Krzewinski let Hartmann get away for the win.

Zack Emmons was able to overcome an injury from earlier in the day to take the win in HPV Jr. Emmons was involved with a crash with Doug Della when the two got together in the first heat, with Della's kart getting up on top of Emmons for a second. Emmons went to the hospital and got his left arm checked out, but all was OK and she returned for the feature.
